How do Christmas lights break from the time you store them away in January to the time you take them out again in December? They just sit there all year.

Well, you see, Jessie there is a logical explanation for this.
There are these things called "bad elves." They flunked out of the North Pole for some reason or another--usually eating too many candy canes or putting square wheels on toy trains.
Anyway, so these 'bad elves' have been booted out of the North Pole and they now are spread out around the world depending on how much force was used for 'kicking' them out.
So now, these 'bad elves' get into people's houses. (I hear Waterloo has a very large population actually) They sneak into their houses and since they, as elves, were not allowed to enjoy Christmas all year round...they feel that humans can't either. They go from house to house and destroy people's Christmas decorations while they are stored away until next year. Tinkering with sparkling Christmas lights, making 'tape marks' on decorations and crushing beloved keepsake ornaments. It's like their 'bad elf' therapy. They break what once brought them joy. Their new boss, the Grinch, he gives them all these ideas.
I think they actually have a documentary on it. Well, of their boss anyway. It's by this well-respected doctor by the name of Seuss. I believe the film is called "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" but I could be wrong on the name. Anyway, it's a fabulous piece and I feel you should really look into it. Very insightful. It's kind of like the 'Screwtape Letters' of Christmas elves gone wrong.
Hope this helps,
